Many causes: There are many causes that result in eye redness. Some of the more common ones include dryness, allergies, lack of sleep, infections, bruises, inflammations, aging, chemical exposures, medications, eyelid diseases ; injuries.

Permanent?: Dry eyes (from reduced tear production) are the most likely cause but exposure to any irritant can do the same. Try some artificial tear 3 to 4 x daily. See eye doctor if not improved after a couple of weeks. I assume that there is no itching.
