Macroglossia : You need to see an oral surgeon. In some cases, surgery can decrease the size of your tongue but you might need orthodontics (braces) as well. In addition, your tonsils should be checked and blood tests run to rule out certain diseases that cause enlarged tongue. An oral surgeon can help you get on the right track and your medical (not dental) insurance should cover the surgery.

Tongue cancer: It is possible you have tongue cancer. I would suggest you see an oral surgeon or an oral pathologist as soon as possible to rule out tongue cancer!

Or small space: Has your tongue always seemed large, or does it seem to have gotten bigger? Many people with these problems have crowded teeth which are infringing on the tongue space. You may also want to seek out an oral pathologist to see about the swelling.
