Acid reflux maybe: A persistent, non productive cough may be caused by postnasal discharge or acid reflux. Try elevating the head of your bed when you sleep using a bed wedge or blocks under the head of the bed. Avoid eating 3 hours before bedtime and you can take an otc acid medication like Prilosec or Prevacid (lansoprazole) one hour before dinner. If your problems persist, see your doctor.

Other reasons: Chronic cough can have multiple causes. Asthma can present as a dry chronic cough, as can reflux. Some infections like pertussis or other viral infections can also produce lingering cough. I would recommend being evaluated by a physician to determine the cause and get the right treatment.
