One of two thing: The swelling come from inside the knee (water on the knee) or some thing from the outside (bursitis of the knee). Both cause the same symptoms you mention. Water on the knee we have to find the reason for it before to start to treat it. The bursitis you could have cortisone shot for it and it may help.

Knee swellling: Try alternating ice and heat. If it continues your doctor can prescribe a steroid since you cannot take ibuprofen.
