Yes.: Before an orthodontist will place brackets or other types of orthodontic appliances, they will make sure that you are keeping your teeth clean, you have good gum health (even though you have had periodontal disease in the past), and make sure you no longer have active periodontal disease. Sometimes a referral to a periodontist for an evaluation is necessary prior to starting braces.
