How does your diet affect your eye health?

Diet is important: There has been much research done that shows your diet is directly related to your eye health. High fat diets have been linked to age-related macular degeneration (amd). Smoking is also a risk factor for amd. Certain nutrients have been shown to be helpful in patients with amd. You should consult with a retina specialist to determine if you should be taking certain eye vitamins.

Be healthy: Diet can affect eye health in conditions such as diabetes and hypertension, both of which can be worsened by poor diet and can lead to blindness. Those prone to macular degeneration may benefit from high doses of vitamins a, c, and e, but there are no good studies proving that specific diets prevent major eye diseases such as glaucoma, cataracts, and macular degeneration. The key: eat healthy!
