Antihistamines: Hives are a result of an allergic reaction. If you know what you are allergic to, the first step is to avoid further contact with that substance. Antihistamine medications (i.e. Benadryl, (diphenhydramine) claritin, zyrtec) all help limit the allergic response. In severe cases another class of antihistamine (pepcid or zantac) can also be added.
