Common sense: I often times tell my patients "common sense isn't all that common" and it applies to your question. The best way to avoid the 'common' problems is to be proactive in making sure they do not become problems in the first place. Keep flammable items away from stoves/ovens/heat sources; make sure floor rugs are taped down to prevent slippage, and so on. Hope this answers your inquiry.

Avoidance/handling: The most common environmental hazards are tobacco smoke, radon, asbestos, lead, combustion gases, household chemicals and pesticides. Radon is, more or less, present in most locations; protections can be built into buildings. Lead and asbestos should be avoided in construction and paint. Oxygen, nitrogen, household cleaners and pesticides must be stored and used only as directed. Use good sense:)
