Varied: The answer depends on how well controlled the diabetes is. If poorly controlled at conception, increased risks of miscarriage and birth defects. If moderately to poorly controlled during pregnancy, risks of fetal demise. If sugars not well controlled these infants have a number of risks including difficult or dangerous vaginal births because they can be so large in size. Control is critical!

Big for mom, baby: With difficulty controlling type 1 dm, women face increased risk of poor glycemic control, dka, preeclampsia, hospitalization, induction of labor or early delivery if problems. Babies may be small (growth restricted or early) or too big, have birth defects, suffer stillbirth or problems as newborn (eg, respiratory or bs problems, etc) best to improve control, see mfm before trying to conceive ttc.

Stay in control!: It's very important to have good control over diabetes at all times. Good control is necessary for a healthy pregnancy and also for a healthy baby. Fetal development can be negatively impacted when diabetes is not well-controlled during pregnancy. Poor control may also result in a too large baby making delivery more of a challenge.
