Fetal addiction: The dose you need to avoid withdrawal may increase as your pregnancy progresses. Your child will be addicted at birth and will have to detox in the nicu. Not the end of the world, but not how you'd hope he/she would start out life.

Dependent baby: Methadone was thought to be safe based on studies comparing heroin using mothers to Methadone using mothers. The Methadone group and babies did better. That doesnt mean Methadone is safe, just safer than heroin. The best choice is no opioids. But if opioids are necessary Methadone up to 20 mg per day might be ok with sufficint pre and postnatal care. Baby will need detox.
