Depends: If drug therapy is effective, then you are typically not capable of infecting others after 10 to 14 days. But this must be tempered by an understanding that your sputum cultures and smears must be checked to confirm they are now negative.

The risk is highest: Before therapy begins and decreases pretty quickly on appropriate therapy by producing decreased cough and killing the bacteria. We often use 2 weeks of therapy as a guideline for no longer infectious but it is important to get the children tested. Children less than 2 years old who get exposed are often treated until there is evidence that they weren't infected.
