A protein: Albumins are proteins which dissolve in water and are not covered with chains of sugars. The most common is serum albumin. These molecules transport other molecules which don't dissolve in water very well. But its main function is to regulate the amount of water in the blood. Another type of Albumin is the protein in egg whites.

A 33-year-old female asked:

What is the definition of glycosylated albumin and why would it be important for my health?

Glycemic control: Hemoglobin and serum albumin undergo glycosylation ie. binds with glucose. Glycosylated hemoglobin level (HbA1) is widely used as index of glycemic control in diabetic patients but due to long survival time of erythrocytes (120 days), it remains elevated for several weeks after improved control. Glycosylated serum albumin (GSA) has a shorter half-life (20 days) so it can detect changes earlier

A 46-year-old male asked:

Past 7 physicals Globulin was 3.2/2.5/2.2/2.3/2.2/2.0/1.8. Albumin 4.3/4.7/4.4/4.7/4.4/4.3/4.5. So ratio has risen. Should I be Globulin is dropping?

Stop worrying: These things fluctuate. Meeting a virus that may not even make you sick will up the globulin and down the albumin a bit.
