Extra beat: A premature ventricular contraction is an extra beat from the bottom of the heart. Any cell in the heart can cause a heart beat but most usually stay quiet and defer to the main electrical system. Occasionally a single cell can fire off on its own causing an extra, or what many people refer to as a "skipped" beat, much like a muscle twitch.
