Staphylococcus aureu: When a doctor says "staph infection", they usually mean the more pathogenic staphylococcus, staphylococcus aureus. This is an organism that is all around us and can live normally on our skin, but when it gets into the body, it can wreak havoc due to how aggressively it grows and the toxin it produces.

Staph Infection: An infection caused by any one of the staphylococcus species of bacteria. These bacteria are part of the bioburden of the human body, so that the mere presence of these on the skin does not equate into an infection.
