No known food causes: Cleft lip occurs when left, right, and upper parts of the lip do not fuse properly in an embryo. No foods are known to cause it. Maternal smoking and alcohol/drug abuse increase the chances of a cleft. Cleft lip runs in some families, but can also happen in a variety of genetic mutations. It occurs least in africans (<1 in 1000 births) and most in oriental asians and native americans (3-4/1000).
