Developement: Transient tics occur in 5-7 yr olds as blinking or shoulder hitching, or similar movements. They disappear rapidly. Tics are part of a class of disorders called "motor movement disorders" that can be simple, complex, tourette's or panda's. Duration: Tics come in many forms--vocal or motor, transient or chronic, simple or complex. Transient tics (vocal or motor) last only for a few days or weeks or occur only occasionally, usually under increased stress; they are quite common especially in boys 6-9 years old. They are benign, do not require treatment, and nearly always resolve spontaneously. A eye or cheek twich is a common example.

Involuntary movement: Tics are involuntary motor movements. They may present as transient tics, or what some call habit spasms. These begin in childhood and may last days to months ias a single tic, then subside spontaneously. There are chronic tics, waxing and waning over an extended period of months to years, There are multiple tics, several beginning around the same time. Meds may help.
