Frequently.: Oppositionality and bipolar disorder are frequently associated. Oppositional defiance is a symptom complex, not a disorder. Opposionality is a common symptom in many disorders. Almost every patient with bipolar disorder has some level of oppositionality.

Controversial: Traditionall odd is associated with adhd: 40% of those with adhd also have odd. Odd usually starts at a young age and may continue lifelong or evolve into conduct disorder durng adolescence or resolve. Bipolar disorder is a controversial diagnosis in childhood; in its most consertative usage, it probably is not associated is odd. A careful workup is needed, probably with child psychiatry.

Not Common: Many of the difficulties associated with oppositional defiant disorder could be seen in a child with bipolar disorder. So, if a child truly has bipolar disorder, it will be best to explain the defiance and temper outbursts as part of the bipolar disorder, as opposed to using a separate diagnosis. When possible, it is always best to try to explain things with as few diagnoses as possible.
