A member asked:

Are there any good non-medical treatments that help with mental retardation?

Depends on dfn of rx: The primary approach to management of mr depends on level & involves a focus on teaching self help skills, providing individualized life skill assistance with a goal of promoting near independent living if possible. I've seen special diets & alternative rxs offered, none have lived up to their promises. Mr is like the engine in your car, if you have 4 chamber engine it's never going to work like an 8.

Hmmm: Most treatments are "non-medical." educational accommodations, work place training, and other social interventions are the usual approach to intellectually challenged people. Use of donepizil or memantine have been shown to increase intellectual functioning in some people, depending on the cause. Unfortunately not in downs syndrome.

Many help function: The goal of therapies is to help a person with intellectual disability learn to function in the community as independently as possible. They address behavioral, occupational, physical, academic, communication and social skills. Funding for therapies may be available through SSI and medicaid. A free and appropriate education in the least restrictive setting is mandated by the federal law idea.
