Can thalassemia cause hearing loss?

Maybe if excess iron: Thalassemia carriers (thalassemia trait) probably have the same chance of hearing problems as non-thalassemia persons have. However, thalassemia patients with severe anemia who need regular blood transfusions will get iron overload. Iron overload may cause some hearing loss. The treatment for iron overload is chelation therapy, which can cause hearing loss.
