A member asked:

Can you use chiropractic manipulation as a good additional treatment to physical therapy?

Yes: I often find that using both osteopathic medicine which is similar to chiropractic treatment and physical therapy is often more effective in helping patients with their musculoskeletal ailments than using either alone. An added benefit is that patients actively pursuing physical therapy often need less osteopathic treatment in the long run.

Probably not: Chiro manipulation offers a deep thrusting massage which sometimes can provide a little extra relief over physical therapy, but usually not. It does not offer a cure. Deep thrusting massage of the neck is dangerous and should not be allowed. You are seeing a pt on a prescription from your regular md (or orthopod), so ask for advice about this.

Yes: There are many chiropractic offices that also provide physical therapy techniques and modalities (TENS, Ultrasound therapy, etc.) If combined with exercises and proper home care instructions, this therapy can be very viable.
