Why does liver disease make you jaundiced?

Backup of Toxins: The liver is the bodies main recycling center. Blood brings toxins & metabolic debris to the liver. Liver tissue processes the material and dumps the waste into bile channels which empty into the intestines. The waste is greenish but turns yellow & brown over time providing color to stool. If the liver is unable to clean the blood, the material backs up & produces the yellow skin color.

Bilirubin: The liver is in charge of the body's bilirubin. As the liver gets sick, the levels of bilirubin rise in the blood to abnormal levels. Bilirubin over a certain level causes jaundice.
