Genetic or mutation: Wpw is present when the heart's electrical system has an accessory (extra) pathway connecting the upper and the lower chambers together. This predisposes the person to fast heart rates (arrhythmias). The person with WPW is born with the accessory pathway and does not acquire it during his/her life. Wpw is autosomal dominant but there are multiple genetic variations.
