Joint : Joint pain and stiffness can have many causes, so an evaluation to exclude osteoarthritis and inflammatory arthropathies should be done if symptoms are severe. General health mainteinance with regular cardiovascular exercise, stretching, and strengthening is also key to maintaining joint flexibility and health. The american academy of orthopedic surgeons in its 2008 guidelines on the nonsurgical treatment of knee osteoarthritis (http://www.Aaos.Org/research/guidelines/oakrecommendations.Pdf) recommends the use of over-the-counter analgesics such as acetaminophen, Ibuprofen or naproxen, as well as recommending the use of glucosamine and chondroitin suifate, a nutritional supplement. The latter is sold in in many formulations at health food stores drug stores, and grocery stores. Although the exact mechanism of action of this supplement is not fully understood, there is a growing body of evidence that it has anti-inflammatory properties in joints and can slow the progression of arthritic changes in joints.
