Bactrim (sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim) : Bactrim (sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim) (sulfa/trimethoprim) is a reasonable antibiotic to treat utis, however the only way to know if the bacteria causing a UTI will be appropriately treated with Bactrim (sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim) is to test a urine sample. Bacteria resistent to antibiotics are more and more common as we use more and more antibiotics so this is especially true in patients with recurrent utis that have received multiple courses of antibiotics over their lifetime, even if the antibiotics were for different reasons.
