AVR: Exactly what it says. If there is a problem with the aortic valve (between left ventricle and aorta) (either narrowed -stenotic- or leaking -insufficient) it can be surgically replaced. It can be replaced with a mechanical "metal" or tissue valve "pig valve".

A procedure....: Aortic valve replacement usually involves surgically removing a patients own diseased aortic valve and replacing it with a valve constructed fom metal or cow tissue. Sometimes a human valve is used (homografts). More recently, aortic valves have been replaced by stenting, a non-surgical technique in higher risk individuals.
