Bladder : Bladder infections are common, especially in women. Typically they are caused by bacteria that are introduced through the urethra. Because the urethra is shorter in women, they probably get bacteria introduced into their bladder more often and more easily than men. Less commonly, men or women with kidney stones or difficulty emptying their bladder can develop bladder infections as well. Some women develop utis after sex. This can be reduced by emptying the bladder before and after intercourse. Our best defense against bladder infections is emptying the bladder completely. Some research has also shown that unsweetened cranberry juice can also reduce the risk of recurrent utis if the utis are caused by e.Coli. Typically the symptoms of a UTI resolve quickly with the initiation of antibiotics but most physicians request a urine sample to actually test for infection. This also then gets tested against various antibiotics to ensure that the bacteria are sensitive to the specific antibiotics.
