A member asked:

Can knee replacement be done more cheaply overseas? is knee replacement a procedure that can be done inexpensively in other countries through medical tourism?

Depends. : Depends. If you're uninsured, or have a very high co-pay, and want surgery in the us, it's probably worth talking to the hospital's financial counseling office. You can often negotiate to pay medicare rates (about $15, 000 in most areas), and this is very much lower than what's typically thrown around in the media. Keep in mind that if you go overseas and have a complication, your costs could rise very quickly. And if you have a problem once you return, it may be very hard to find someone to take care of it (surgeons generally don't like to inherit other doctor's problems!).

Knee replacement: Yes, it probably can be done less expensively overseas. You have to consider, however, whether the surgeon doing the procedure overseas will fly to the us to operate on you in case of a complication. When things go wrong you may not want to get on a place overseas to see him/her.
