Although : Although orthodontists sometimes use the same braces for both adults and children there are many differences in the way they are treated. Adults may present with some degree of periodontal involvement that must be addressed. Also, many adults have missing or worn down teeth, crowns or bridges that were made to fit their old bite, or they may have health issues or are taking medications that may affect tooth movement. Because of these complications, many orthodontists will discourage adults seeking treatment, while others are eager to take on the challenge.

I : I agree with the above answer in that adults present with a greater amount of dental work and periodontal issues than children. The good news is that adults are usually more compliant about all phases of treatment including home care. I do a considerable amount of adult cosmetic dentistry and a component that is often overlooked is orthodontic treatment. Some of this is due to the reluctance of adults to want to wear braces but also to some degree the fact that not all orthodontists treat adult patients routinely. Be certain that you are being referred to an orthodontist who is comfortable with adult orthodontics.

First : First of all i would like to congratulate you on your decision to have orthodontic treatment, is never late to realize a dream. I always recommend my patients undergoing orthodontic treatment to have periodic (4 times a year or more if necessary)visits to the dentist for periodontal maintenance. Good luck!
