As : As a general rule, water (fluid) retention is more likely to produce swelling in both feet/legs. If only one foot is swollen, it's usually something locally that's wrong, and the list is endless as to what it might be. Tell your friend to see her doctor about it and get checked out, perhaps even an x-ray would be prudent. Something is going on in her foot that's causing the swelling, and it's probably not her body retaining water.

Many possibilities: Some causes of swelling can include systemic problems such as hypertension, and problems with the kidneys and localized issues such as arthritis, infection, lymphatic obstruction, blood clots, varicose veins, trauma (fracture, sprain, tendonitis) and side effects to medication. Have it evaluated by a professional and get the appropriate treatment.

Drug effect?: Leg edema may occur when one is taking calcium-channel blocker type of drugs to control high bp. However, heart or kidney failure as well as varicose veins can cause it too. I will make sure that it is not caused by drug but in the meanwhile get a thorough medical evaluation.
