A : A root canal does not remove the root. The dentist will clean out the inside of the root (the canal) leaving the root in place. The pain that you are feeling is the result of pressure beyond the end of the tooth into the supporting bone due to the contaminants and bacteria in the canal. Once the canal is cleaned and filled the pessure will subside and you will get relief from the pain.

When : When doing a root canal treatment only the nerve and blood vessels from inside the tooth is removed and sterilized then filled. The tooth and its root stay intact. Most of the time decay or trauma is what causes the nerve to get infected with bacteria or to die out. Having a root canal treatment can help you keep the tooth and if you are in pain, it should relieve the pain.

Root : Root canal only removes the infected or diseased nerve from the root, not the root itself. In an abscess, generally the tissues in the bone around the tooth become irritated or infected from the diseased nerve and the process of removing the diseased nerve and replacing it with an inert cement remove the source of irritation or infection and allow the tissues around the tooth to heal and the pain or discomfort to go away. Depending on the severity of the irritation/infection, the pain relief can be immediate or can take a few days.

Root : Root canal therapy is not removing the root, but removing the insides of the root. A hollowing out of the tooth in effect. The source of the pain is the diseased tissue, so it's removal will allow the body to heal. Often the relief is felt immediately, but sometimes time is needed to feel completely resolved.

Cause treated: The root canal treatment will remove the cause of abcess and seal canal to stop from return. The root is not removed. The hollow tube or canal in root of tooth containing the pulp tissues(nerve, blood vessels, etc.) is cleaned, shaped, and filled eliminating the dead tissues. The tooth socket will begin to heal, infection resolve, and pain and swelling will dissipate. Antibiotics may help.

Dead Tissue: If you have an abscessed tooth, there is dead tissue in the canal(s) and debris if the canal is open to the oral environment. This material irritates the bone and surrounding tissue, creating pressure, an inflammatory response, and pain. Root canal therapy removes this tissue and debris from the tooth and allows the bone and gum to heal.
