2 weeks: It takes about 2 weeks for your tongue to learn that it has been restricted to a different position and adjust. Until then, eating, chewing, swallowing, and speaking changes becuause the tongue is in a new position.

Palatal expander: Palatal expanders may take a person up to two weeks or more to get used to depending upon the degree of sensitivity of the individual and then each time the expander is activated one may need to acclimate to the appliance. If the discomfort is too unbearable, have the appliance reevaluated for possible modifications.

Worst is over: After the 1st few days your tongue will quickly adapt to the appliance. 95% of speech change gone in a week. By then you will feel much more natural when eating.
