How often does keratitis cause scarring? i've heard that infections in your cornea leave scars. is that always true, or is there a way to make sure it heals without scarring?

Steroid : Steroid eye drops can limit scaring in some situations. They should be used only after the infection is under control. A recent study showed no huge impact in the final visual performance when steroids were used or not used in the treatment of bacterial keratitis. The final "scar" and its impact on vision is not realized until a person is 12-16 months out from and infection in my experience. The cornea has a remarkable ability to heal. Intense scars can clear some with time. Every case is different. The more central the scar, the greater its impact.

It : It depends on the type of infection and the treatment. Sooner you start the treatment, you will decrease the risk of scar formation. Some doctors may use steroid drops toward the conclusion of an infection to minimize scarring.
