Good : Good vocal hygiene is important. Try to avoid any vocally abusive behavior such as raising or straining your voice, forceful coughing or throat clearing behaviors. If symptoms have not spontaneously improved with conservative measures within a week, I have often prescribed a short-term course of oral steroids ( Medrol (methylprednisolone) dosepak ). The cause for post-viral dysphonia has to do with swelling and inflammation of the mucosa (lining) of your vocal cords and impact on how they vibrate when talking. Obviously, if you are a smoker this is counter-productive to recovery, and you should try to avoid being around any chemicals or volatile inhaled substances that can further irritate your throat.
