Rarely: I do not instruct patients to check for the string on a routine basis. Expulsion of the IUD is rare. If in doubt or you need reassurance then check.

Checking IUD strings: There are no guidelines on when you should be checking your IUD strings, in general if you are having cramps or changes in your bleeding, you can check the strings to see if the IUD has been dislodged, however that would be rare. most doctors offer a 6 week appointment to follow up with you on how you are doing with the IUD and to check the strings, but this is not always necessary
