IUd: The procedure is done in the office and is similar to the exam for a pap smear. Speculum is inserted in the vagina and local anesthetic may be injected, not needed most of the time. We usually stabilize the cervix with an instrument called tenaculum, then the cavity is sounded. Since this is done while you are on your period the cervix is somewhat dilated the iud insertion probe is introduced.
