Vaccine & screening: The most common cause of cervical cancer is infection with the human papilloma virus (hpv). Girls and young women should get the vaccine against hpv, called gardasil, to protect against cervical cancer. Beginning at age 21, you can also discuss getting a screening pap smear with your gynecologist or primary care physician, which assesses the cells of the cervix for any abnormalities.

Safe sex: Cervical cancer is caused by (some strains) of hpv virus that spreads by sexual contact. Consider hpv vaccine if young and not yet infected. Regular pap smears should start with commencement of sexual activity (there is no specific age to start pap smears). Use protection (condoms) during intercourse, choose your partner carefully. Don't smoke and do lead a healthy lifestyle.
