A member asked:

Can i take antibiotics once a day instead of twice? i'm suppose to be taking 500 mg of amoxicillin twice a day, once in the morning and once at night. can i just take 1000 mg once a day or would that be too much?

You : You can, but you shouldn't! Amoxicillin is cleared quickly in the kidneys, so it won't really harm you to take twice the amount at once. But you won't have constant blood levels in order to fight infection. You really need to take it twice a day.

I wouldn't: Antibiotics are absorbed through the gut into the blood. The dose initially determines how much is available to kill the germs, but the med is lost through your kidneys at a steady rate. The dose timing is meant to assure that meds lost in the kidneys are replaced &enough is kept the blood to kill germs.Take extra at one time= higher amount to start but gone within 8-12 hours & none left to work.
