If : If this is acute onset (not a recurring problem) and your son is still constipated he needs to be evaluated right away by a medical professional. If he has had a normal bowel movement by now then he does not need to be seen. Please make sure his diet is rich in fruits and vegetables and that he drinks plenty of water. If meat products cause constipation, then they should be avoided. Take care.

Since : Since you posted your question several days ago, you've no doubt addressed this issue by now. However, these situations have a way of repeating themselves, so it's worth discussing here. When a child is uncomfortable from constipation, a glycerin suppository and a dose of a gentle laxative are worth a try (i recommend miralax, (polyethylene glycol) which can be mixed with just about any beverage). This can be repeated as necessary until bowel function returns to normal. Now, if a child is in severe pain, you might try a single glycerin suppository to see if it produces immediate results, but this is a situation that merits early medical evaluation (other serious causes of abdominal pain, such as appendicitis, can masquerade as constipation). If constipation is an ongoing problem, it's often the result of too little dietary fiber, too little water, too much sugar, and too little exercise. All of these factors play a role in childhood constipation. However, if constipation persists despite addressing all of these concerns, your pediatrician may want to investigate other potential causes, such as hirschprung's disease. I hope things have settled down in the past few days!
