You : You are correct. A dry mouth with decreased salivary flow will allow food to adhere to the teeth, increasing the chances of cavities and gum disease. What must be determined first is the cause of your dry mouth. Do you take high blood pressure meds? Are you anxious or nervous? Many medications have dry mouth as a side effect. There are also certain medical conditions that can cause dry mouth. You should consult with your dentist and bring a list of medications for him/her to review. There are saliva substitites for severe cases, but as you said, keeping will hydrated and having meticulous oral hygene may be enough. See the below link.
