What must be determined first is the cause of your dry mouth. Do you take high blood pressure meds? Are you anxious or nervous? Many medications have dry mouth as a side effect. There are also certain medical conditions that can cause dry mouth. You should consult with your dentist and bring a list of medications for him/her to review. There are saliva substitites for severe cases, but as you said, keeping will hydrated and having meticulous oral hygene may be enough. See the below link.
