Any : Any procedure has it's risks and benefits... The risks of a colonoscopy include: 1- bleeding (if your doctor removes a polyp and the area where they removed that polyp bleeds) 2- perforation (if the scope makes a hole in your colon risk is about 1/1000 in experienced hands) 3- missing a polyp or cancer (a colonoscopy is a good test but it's not perfect so the doctor might miss a small polyp or a small cancer. If your bowel prep wasn't good that risk is higher) if you are 65 the risks of having the colonoscopy are much less than the risk of going unscreened for colon cancer. If colon cancer is detected early you have a chance of being cured and survive the cancer. By the way... March is colorectal cancer awareness month so take care of your colon and tell your friends who are over 50 years old who have never had a colonoscopy that they need a colonoscopy... It just might save their lives.

The danger: Of not doing a colonoscopy and having an undetected polyp or colon cancer far outweighs the risk of getting a colonoscopy. Discuss with the doctor who is to perform the colonoscopy and ask them this same question. They should discuss with you the risk benefits and alternatives in obtaining your consent for the procedure.
