Various problems: BV itself isn't usually serious, but it does increase the risk of ascending infection into the uterus and fallopian tubes, and in pregnancy may elevate the chance of premature labor and of infection after delivery (post-partum endometritis). Also, BV is associated with higher chance of having STDs like gonorrhea or chlamydia, which of course can cause serious health problems themsevles.
