A member asked:

Does accelerated orthodontics cause more pain that regular orthodontics? my daughter likes the idea of going with accelerated orthodontics, but i remember having some pain and tenderness when i had braces, and this seems like it would be worse to me.

There : There is no such thing as a free lunch! indeed, accelerated orthodontics does inflict more discomfort than does regular braces. I am an orthodontist, and i would not advise accelerated orthodontics for my children.

As : As a dual specialist in orthodontics and periodontics I do recommend accelerated orthodontics in very complex situations after the age of 16 Y.O., when patients present with insufficient bony housing around teeth and are at risk of developing root exposure after orthodontic treatment. In "some" not "all" situations this treatment allows us to grow bone around teeth. I do not justify this invasive procedure to accelerate tooth movement alone, particularly in a young patient. Go for 2nd opinion...

Yes : Yes your daughter will experience pain and tenderness. The movement of teeth always causes brief discomfort. Accelerated, traditional or invisalign orthodontic treatments all push or pull on your teeth that is how orthodontist make them straight. Ask your dentist or orthodontist to recommend advil, (ibuprofen) mouthrinse or biting wafer to relieve the pressure and pain during the first few days then after adjustments. Good luck.

Accelerated : Accelerated orthodontics is mostly used for minor tooth movement and, pain is definetly a reaction to the pressure applied. When the treatment is more extensive, accelerated orthodontics is not recommended because the roots of the teeth may risk a problem of reabsorption and that should be taken into account. When planning your treatment consult with your dentist the pros and cons. Good luck!

Yes: It's a surgical procedure. It's applicable for adults, but i would not do it for teens or tweens in my practice.

It requires surgery: Accelerated orthodontics, or orthodontics aided by periodontal bone cutting procedures does increase the speed of orthodontic treatment along with discomfort and cost. 18-24 months of traditional orthodontic treatment goes by quite quickly and there seems no reason to go with accelerated treatment. All the members of my family have had traditional orthodontic treatment and all are happy.
