If : If you can bend the finger, then it's unlikely that you've got a major break that goes across the bone. However, it is possible to break off the part of the bone where the ligaments or tendons insert (called an avulsion injury). Failure to treat an avulsion injury by immobilizing the joint in a proper position can lead to an unstable joint that's prone to dislocation or degenerative joint disease. Though they aren't free, xrays of the finger should not be too expensive and knowing there's an injury so that it can be treated correctly is worth the cost.
