What happens if a child gets gh treatment (growth hormone), without having gh deficiency?

Effect Varies: Gh rx is sometimes considered in pts with profound short stature and delayed bone maturity. This can yield enough growth to help an anxious kid relax and fit in more with his peer group. This is separate from a subgroup thought to make defective gh that doesn't work but will show positive on blood levels. In the 1st group, final height is not likely to change. In the second, final height is taller.

Depends: Hgh treatment has been shown to be adequate for other causes of growth failure independently of the gh levels.

Depends...: Majority of short statured children have no known cause for their stature. They do not have growth hormone deficiency. Studies have shown that some of these kids (called idiopathic short stature) benefit from growth hormone treatment. It is fda approved treatment but is still controversial. Turner's, noonan's, prader willi and SGA also may not have gh deficiency but benefit from treatment with gh.
