A member asked:

Will silicone implants used in a cheek augmentation provide a better shape than other options? i'm considering using silicone implants for my cheek augmentation, are they made from the same material as breast implants, or are they more durable?

The : The silicone implants used for cheek augmentation are actually solid rather than having liquid silicone in their core. As such there is no risk of rupture with cheek implants. There are other options for augmenting the cheek which include using facial fillers or fat graftining. These options have the benefit of being able to augment a more widespread area of the face. Fillers such as restylane, (dermal fillers) juvderm and Radiesse can be placed in the office, though they aren't permanent. Fat grafting involves harvesting your own fat and then injecting it carefully into your face in the areas that need augmentation. The fat grafts that take are long lasting and can give very nice results.

Cheek : Cheek implants are made from solid silicone and when healed will feel like your own firm cheeks. They are a better long lasting solution than repeated fat or other fillers and are symmetrical.

Cheek Implants: I do not recommend cheek implants. Over time as your face ages the implants will stay in the same place as the tissue over them droops down. The result is a very unnatural look. A far better option is fat grafting. www.vipplasticsurgery.com.

Solid silicone: Cheek silicone implants are made of solid silicone so no risk of rupture. They are safe and chosen properly can be really nice. However, not done properly, they can be mal positioned or have visible contour and look awkward.

Solid silicone: The silicone used for cheek or chin implants tends to be firmer and more solid (greater durometer) than breast implants. When it comes to cheek augmentation, silicone probably has the longest track record although many other options are available such as bone grafts/flaps, or soft tissue augmentation with flaps, fat grafts or fillers. The latter may allow you to "test drive" the appearance.
