To : To not have a period in six months and then to start re-bleeding with so much pain and cramping is abnormal. Women can get irregular periods when they are perimenopausal, but your symptoms sound severe. You need to have a medical evaluation including a complete pelvic exam, pap smear, blood testing and possibly an ultrasound. Please have an immediate medical evaluation.

Delayed menstruation: In late 40's, more stimulation is needed via the pituitary to create ovulation, which delays potential ovulation. In the interval, higher estrogen levels may thicken the lining of the uterus, resulting in much heavier bleeding, with associated increase in pain secondary to clots which need forceful contractions from the uterus to expel. Ask your gyn about low dose oral bcps, to alleviate this.
