Shin : Shin splints is an inflammation of the ligaments and surrounding tissue that runs along the bone in the front of your lower leg (the tibia). This is common in marathon runners such as yourself because of the sheer force you are dealing with as you run and pound the pavement. This is what causes the damage. The treatment is what i like to call rice: rest, ice, compression (ace bandage) and elevation. Also take a few weeks off to give yourself time to heal. In addition you can take an over the counter anti-inflammatory medication such as advil (ibuprofen) or Ibuprofen as directed. Give yourself some time, and you will be back to running very soon.. If your problem worsens or persists seek care from your doctor right away. Good luck.
