A member asked:

Are there liposuction complications that happen often?

13 doctors weighed in across 9 answers

Not if done properly: Complications from liposuction are very rare if patient and doctor selection are made carefully. For example a patient with loose skin after weight loss is not a very good candidate for lipo whereas someone with good skin elasticity and localized extra fat is. An unskilled surgeon or a poor candidate for the procedure can cause bad results and even complications. Choose wisely!

Not Many: Liposuction is a very common safe and effective procedure for most patients. The most common difficulty after liposuction usually relates to incomplete reduction or small irregularities of surface. If the skin is very lax, some wrinkling can be increased volume larger volume removals (such as in lower abdomen). Complication incidence is considered low.

Safety liposuction: Liposuction is not without risk but as this is one of the most frequently performed cosmetic surgeries, it has proven to have a very high safety profile. Seek consultation with a board-certified dermatologist or plastic surgeon who is very experienced in tumescent liposuction.

Not common: Most of the serious risks and complications are associated with the general anesthesia and time spent under rather than the actual liposuction itself. Careful screening of the patient needs to be done before the surgery. Asymmetry or contour irregularities can occur if the surgeon is sloppy. Liposuction is an art, liposculpture being the more accurate term. Results depend on doctor's skills.

Liposuction popular: Liposuction is one of the most popular procedures and therefore the complications are widely reported in the literature but given the volume, this is relatively low. Due to the appearance of it being a simple procedure, it is performed by many inexperienced practitioners with undesireable outcomes.
