Are snakes a good choice for kids with allergies?

No: They are not really pettable, and they may be carriers of salmonella. Their feeding behaviors do not exactly provide a child-friendly experience, either.

Yes: Snakes do not aggravate allergies. Many people enjoy keeping reptiles as pets. But exotic pets such as snakes are not for everyone; they usually live about 20 years, are expert at escaping, and have specific feeding requirements. Your pet store can help you select a captive bred pet. Constricting snakes and venomous snakes are far too dangerous to keep as pets.

Depends: The aap (american academy of pediatrics) and cdc (center for disease control) do not recommend reptiles in the home with children under 5 years of age or in homes with people who have weakened immune systems to prevent the spread of salmonella. Over 5 years old, is debatable. However, regardless, always wash hands thoroughly with soap and water after contact with reptiles (or any animal).
