Nuvaring : Nuvaring is designed to be in place for 3 weeks, then 1 ring free week. You do not need a back up method during the ring free week. Just resume the ring on the date you were supposed to re-insert it. If you have been using this as directed, then a back up method was not necessary during your ring free week. However if you miss your period, take a pregnancy test. The pregnancy hormone can be detected in the system 14 days after conception.

Probably not: The ring is good for three weeks, but would also work for a fourth week if desired. It would not affect the birth control by leaving the ring in an extra two days (or a week).
